Obituary for Charles T. "Cooch" Mullen, Jr.

Charles T. "Cooch"  Mullen, Jr.
FORT EDWARD -

Charles Thomas Mullen Jr. was born 13-Nov-1926 on Frank Street in Fort Edward, son of Charles and Eva (Trombley) Mullen. He passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

"Cooch" graduated from Fort Edward High School in 1944 and then joined the US Navy, where he served his country during World War 2 as a radioman and was awarded two service medals.

He attended Skidmore College for one year and then transferred to Plattsburgh Teachers College (now SUNY Plattsburgh), where he graduated with the class of 1950.

He began his career in education at Hartford Central School, where he taught 6th grade for six years. He then moved to Fort Edward Public Schools, first as a Social Studies teacher in the Junior High School, then as the Media Supervisor, the Principal of the Junior High School, the Principal of the Elementary School, and finally as the Superintendent of Schools, a position from which he retired in 1988.

In 1949 Charles married Joan Melissa Hess of Gilboa in St. John's Church, Plattsburgh. They lived in Fort Edward for over 60 years and were active members of their community. Cooch served on the Fort Edward Village Board for many years and was mayor of the village at one time. He was a member of the Idle Hour and Lions Clubs of Fort Edward, the Glens Falls BPOE Elks Lodge, the Whitehall and Fort Edward American Legions, the Washington County Sewer Agency and the Washington County Local Development Corporation. He was also a former director of the Fort Hudson Nursing Home and chairman of the Lions Club annual drum corps competitions for thirty years.

In addition to his parents, Charles was predeceased by three sisters: Charlotte Forte, Jane Godfrey, and Jean Havens.

Charles is survived by his wife, Joan (Hess) Mullen, two sons, Patrick Mullen of Fort Edward and Peter Mullen of Connecticut; a daughter, Ann-Melissa VanEarden and her husband, Harold, of Saratoga, three grandchildren, Zachary James VanEarden, Benjamin Charles VanEarden and Rachel Melissa VanEarden; a sister, Shirley Havens of Hudson Falls, a daughter-in-law, Jeanie St. Mary Mullen of Fort Edward, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family and friends may call on Monday, April 5, 2010 from 4 to 7pm at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY. Online condolences may be posted at www.kilmerfuneralhome.com.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am, Tuesday, April 6th at St Joseph Church, 164 Broadway, Fort Edward.

The Rite of Committal will follow at St Joseph Cemetery in Fort Edward.
