Obituary for John F. Cronkhite

John F. Cronkhite, 78, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at his home.

Born in Fort Edward on November 4, 1940, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Simmons) Cronkhite.

The day after he graduated Fort Edward High School in 1958, he enlisted in the United States Navy as an electronics technician and proudly served his country aboard the USS Chilton during the Bay of Pigs era. Once John was discharged, he gained employment locally in manufacturing and the paper industries.

John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting & fishing in all seasons. His vegetable gardens were a labor of love. He couldn’t wait to harvest and share them with family members. He was a history buff, walking encyclopedia, had an arsenal of jokes and enjoyed storytelling at all social gatherings and family reunions. He devoted a lot of his time to researching & recording the family lineage as he was proud of his heritage and willing to pass down his findings.

He was a life time member of The Veterans of Foreign War & The American Legion - William J. Varney Post 862 in Lake Luzerne, a member of the Honor Guard, and was a former member of the Satterlee Hose Company in Fort Edward.

Along with his parents, John is predeceased by his sister, Helen “Ruthie” Cronkhite and infant son, John Raymond Cronkhite.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Michele Manaher and husband Don, Michael Cronkhite, Colleen Taft, granddaughter, Heather Taft, grandson, Donny Manaher, granddaughter, Gillian Manaher. brother, Donald W Cronkhite, sister, MaryE Allen & husband Hank, former wife & mother of his children, Carol Hathaway, devoted K9 companion, Buster, former wife Geneva Cronkhite and her children, Stephanie Chadwick and husband Royal, Yvonne Morse, Candy Riley, Denise Barnes, Michael Ovitt and wife Amy, Donna Sutliff, 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends may call from 11am-1pm on Monday, December 10, 2018 at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828.

The Lake Luzerne American Legion will be conducting services at 1pm at the funeral home.

Burial will follow with Military Honors will be at Union Cemetery, Fort Edward.
