Obituary for Joseph LaFond

South Glens Falls

Joseph Florian LaFond, 89, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2018, at Slate Valley Center for Rehabilitation in Granville.

Born on February 8, 1929, in Villeroy, Quebec, Canada, he was the son of the late Wenceslas and Juliet (Belanger) LaFond.

Joe enlisted into the United States Navy in 1947 and served in the Korean War until 1951. He was honored to fly in the 2017 Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Joe married Phyllis Pepe at St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls on Sept. 6, 1953. They spent 54 years together until her passing in October of 2007. Together they raised their two daughters in South Glens Falls. He was a member of the Adirondack Model A’s Club and Cooper’s Cave Car Club. Joe was a lifelong communicant of St. Michael’s Church in South Glens Falls.

He worked for International Paper in Corinth for 36 years, retiring in 1991. After retirement he didn’t stop working, Joe worked for Ridin-Hy Ranch in Warrensburg for many years.

Joe enjoyed woodworking, traveling in his motor home and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents and wife, Joe was predeceased by his siblings, Madge Neville, Benoit LaFond, Gaston LaFond and Joan Ide.

Left to cherish his memory include, his two daughters, Teresa “Teri” LaFond and her significant other, Dennis Williams of Glens Falls and Nancy LaFond-Blair and husband, Ron Blair of Liverpool; his grandchildren, Shawn Wood (Mark) of Malden, MA, Craig Wood (LeAnna) of Queensbury, Bryan Wood of Buffalo, Andrew Brown of Glens Falls, Zachary and Joshua Coldren of Liverpool; his great-grandchildren, Ryan and Samantha Wood of Hudson Falls; his siblings, Frances LaFond, Lucille Starke, Gene LaFond (Wilma), Margaret Mulcahy, Monica LaFond and Paul “Butch” LaFond (Barbara); his sister-in-law, Sue Traver; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and step-grandchildren.

Friends and family may call from 4 to 6pm on Monday, November 26, 2018, at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30am on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at St. Michael Church, 80 Saratoga Ave., South Glens Falls, NY.

Rite of Committal will follow the Funeral Mass at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY at 12pm.
