Obituary for Daniel M. "Papa" McCane

Hartford

Daniel “Papa” McCane, 59, passed away on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, comfortably at home, encircled by his loving wife and children.

Born on March 25, 1959, in Glens Falls, Dan was the third son of Ernest and Muriel (Harvey) McCane, He spent much of his childhood in South Glens Falls, Indian Lake and North Creek. He was proud of his Adirondack upbringing, which laid the foundation for not only his resourcefulness but also his strong work ethic and appreciation for the kindness of good friends.

Dan graduated from South High in 1977. He valued anyone who could teach him new skills and took any opportunity to prove that he was a quick study. He learned at a young age that persistence and honesty would lead to a lot of opportunities, especially in his chosen field of heating and cooling. He worked for various heating and cooling companies locally, often taking any side jobs he was offered as well, to support his family. He started his own successful HVAC business in 1994. Dan loved helping people, and his loyalty to his customers lived on till his final days.
On May 20, 2006, Dan married Darleen Falta at Wild West Ranch in Lake George.
Dan enjoyed all the simple joys of this world. He was an avid outdoorsman, and spent his days hunting, fishing, tinkering with his youngest son, camping in his beloved “Bus”, listening to country music, and antique hunting at auctions. Papa’s famous Sunday Fundays were his happiest times, surrounded by his prized grandchildren, good food, Texas Hold ‘em games and a little Jack Daniels. A Yankee game on in the background made those days even better.

In addition to his parents, Dan was reunited with his brother Phil McCane when he passed away.
Dan believed that “Family comes first, the rest is just noise.” He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory and that legacy: His wife of 12 years, Darleen and the best dog ever, Tazzy; His eldest son Josh and his wife Jessica; His eldest daughter Kate Johnston and her husband Dustin; His youngest daughter Megh Howard and her husband “Mikey” and his youngest son Hunter. Dan was proud of all of his children, and was happiest surrounded by the grandchildren they gave him. He was blessed with nine who called him Papa: Hannah, Dylan and Matthew McCane; Brooke, Carter and Evan Johnston; Angela, Macen and Lucy Howard.

Dan is also survived by his brother John McCane and wife Sandy; His brother Dave McCane and wife Mary; His sister-in-law Becky McCane; His mother-in-law Mary “Betty” Falta; His father-in-law Ronald Falta; His sister-in-law JoAnn Falta and husband Phonsey; as well as several nieces and nephews and countless friends, customers and colleagues he was very grateful for.

Sundays were always “Dad’s Day,” so his life will be celebrated on Sunday, December 2, 2018. Friends may come to call from 11am-1pm Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018 at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home 136 Main Street, South Glens Falls. A Memorial Service will follow the calling hours at the funeral home. Dan believed that a Memorial Service was the opportunity for his loyal friends and family to pay their respects to him, and should be followed by the chance for him to pay his respects to them as well. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held at Fraternal Order of Eagles 80 Main Street, South Glens Falls, immediately follow the Memorial Service.
