Obituary for Leo Francis Cote

Print
Queensbury

Leo Francis Cote, of the Woodlyns at Cedar Court, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2018, at his home from a lengthy fight with AL Amyloidosis, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born September 14, 1944, at Glens Falls Hospital to Irene Baldwin Cote and Reginald Eli Cote.

He was predeceased by his mother, father and his brothers, Robert and Ronald Cote and his nephew Jeffery Cote.

Leo grew up in Glens Falls, NY and graduated from St. Alphonsus Elementary School in 1958 and St. Mary’s Academy in 1962. He graduated from Siena College in 1966 with a BA in History, SUNY Albany in 1968 with a MA in Education, SUNY Albany in 1970 with a MS in Ed. Psych and Statistics and Castleton University in 1980 with a CAGS.

Leo first taught at St. Michael’s Elementary School in South Glens Falls from January through June of 1968 and gave the nuns a run for their money. He organized the first Nun-Student basketball game. From September 1968 through June of 1970 he taught Social Studies at Maple Hill Junior-Senior High School in Castleton-on-the-Hudson, NY, but, when an opening occurred closer to home at Whitehall Junior-Senior High School he decided to come home. He taught Seventh Grade Social Studies and Senior Psychology from 1970 through 2004. As a teacher he was remembered for his, “Archeological Digs” and his field trips to Cooperstown, State Museum in Albany and Boston.

Leo was a member and past President of the Whitehall Teacher’s Association and NYS United Teachers. He was a lifelong member of Adirondack Mountain Club and was an Adirondack 46er #2690, finishing with his son David, on Whiteface Mountain in 1989. He was a Lean-to Adopter for over thirty years. He was a member of the Queensbury Senior Citizens and will be remembered for cooking dinners for the membership, especially the one where Queensbury Central Fire Department had to visit twice and evacuate the Center due to smoke issues. That was the end of Leo’s dinners at Queensbury Senior Center.

Leo was a member of St. Mary’s St. Paul’s Church in Hudson Falls and belonged to The Parish Guild. He and Diana were very active in the original Pre-Cana program and developed the original Greeter Program at the church. He was Past President of the Board of Directors for Cedar Court Homeowners’ Association and enjoyed being with his many friends at Global Fitness in the early morning. He also met each morning with a group of friends at McDonalds on Route 9 in Queensbury where they solved all the local and world problems.

Leo enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially gardening. In past years, when they lived in Kingsbury, his gardens could have fed a small nation. If you were looking for Leo, you might see him in his “showroom” red 2000 Dodge Dakota that was prized possession or he might be helping friends or neighbors with any task they needed. He was incredible friend and neighbor and was loved by all.

He married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Diana Alicia Daggett, on September 24, 1966 at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church in Queensbury. They spent 52 inseparable years, raising their two beautiful children Mary Beth and David, enjoying their grandchildren and traveling extensively in their retirement years. They loved spending their winters cruising the Caribbean or enjoying the winter warmth in Clermont, Florida.

Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Diana; and their two precious children, Mary Beth King and her husband, Bryan of Hudson Falls; and David Leo Cote and his wife Kristen, of Burnt Hills who were his pride and joy; and his beloved and adored grandchildren, Deven Andrew, Allison Paige, Katelyn Elsabeth and Bryce David who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his brother Richard (Sharon) of Little River, SC, his sisters-in-law, Shirley Cote (Lee) West and Frances Savin Cote. Marion Daggett (John) Zinkievich of Charlotte, NC, Martha Anne Daggett Brock of Mechanicville, Nany Temos (Bob) Daggett of Voorheesville. He is also survived by his nephews, Robert (Joni), John Paul (Dawn), Reginald, Richard (Anne), Christopher (Cheri), Stephen (Karen), Scott (Tara) Cote, Michael (Erin) and Craig (Mary) Zinkievich, J. Robert (Lori), Daniel and Michael (Val) Daggett and his nieces, Cathy Cote Brown, Debbie Cote (Art) Dashnaw, Cindy Cote Bapp, Barbara Cote (Bob) Holmes, Michele Cote (Keith) Sheerer, Suzanne (Denny) Cote-Moore, Kimberly Daggett (Dermot) Whelan, Stephanie Zinkievich (Mike) Thrower, Danielle Brock (Dan) Willett, and Laura Brock.

The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mark Hoffman and the incredible staff at the C.R. Wood Cancer Center and Tower 2 as well as Drs. Andrew Garner, Amy Hogan-Moulton and Scott Munro. We would like to thank the staff at Boston University Medical Amyloid Center and Dr. Raymond Comenzo and his staff at Tuft’s Medical Center in Boston. They meant more to us than they could possibly know.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12pm on Friday, October 5, 2018 at St. Mary’s-St. Paul’s, in Hudson Falls.
