Obituary for Gordon Wayne Strong

Gordon Wayne Strong
Gansevoort

Gordon Wayne Strong, 80, of Gansevoort passed away on Monday, July 30, 2018, at Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness, surrounded by his family.

Born on April 19, 1938, in Gansevoort, he was the son of the late George and Beatrice (Smith) Strong.

He attended school in South Glens Falls and then went to work for Smaldone’s Cement Company. In 1955, Gordon enlisted into the United States Navy serving on the USS Amphion AR-13 until 1959.

After returning from the Navy, he worked for Bud Mullen Iron Works, he volunteered for the Moreau Emergency Squad, was a South Glens Falls Little League Coach, a Eucharistic Minister and taught Catechism at St. Theresa’s Chapel in Gansevoort. He retired after 35 years with Local 773 Plumbers and Steamfitters in Queensbury.

One of his greatest joys was getting this ultralight pilots license. After retirement he enjoyed working with computers, listening to country music, watching old westerns and swinging on his porch swing.

He was always available to help his friends and family when needed and would give his shirt off his back to anyone who needed it. Gordon loved seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren, always having candy for them and calling them his buddies.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sons, Fred and Jeffrey Strong; his brothers, Fred and Forrest Strong; his granddaughter, Erin Strong; his great grandchildren, Jacob Streicher and Bethany Schmidt.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Margaret Rita (Maranville) Strong; his children, Connie (Sheldon) Smith of Gansevoort, Tina (Paul) Mulready of Queensbury, Gordon Strong of Saratoga Springs and Randy (Eileen) Strong of Queensbury; his eleven grandchildren, Melissa Streicher, Jessica (Kevin) Byrnes, Kathryn (Andrew) Schmidt, Maranda and Brittney Strong, James, Jared and Nicole Strong, Kelly, Marshall and Kyle Strong; his eight great-grandchildren, Lauryn and Sarah Streicher, Rebekah, Samuel and Aubrey Schmidt, Sophia Byrnes and Charlie and Mia Muniz; his siblings, Adorna Spaulding, Jane Lafountain, Beatrice Carr, Thomas Strong and George Strong; and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Our family would like to thank the nurses on Tower 2 at Glens Falls Hospital, they were angels. We would also like to thank Dr. Sean Bain and Jean Vanauken, PA at Glens Falls Hospital for their compassion and care to our dad and our family.
