Ellen was born on August 20, 1940 in the city of Kingston, NY where she was welcomed into this world by her parents, Dorothy and Elmer Carney. She grew up in the city of Kingston where she attended school and graduated at the age of 16. She then went Concordia - River Forest Teachers College in Chicago, IL where she was the home coming queen and is also where she met her love of her life. Upon graduation in the Spring of 1961 she returned to Kingston to prepare for her wedding in July of ’61. She and Bob began their careers teaching and building a family in Patterson, NJ then two short years later they moved to Danbury, CT and again grew the family again. Eventually in the summer of ’68 they returned to the Hudson Valley settling in the town of Red Hook, NY on Trow Blvd. It was here where she again returned to her passion of teaching at Red Hook Central School at Mill Road Elementary School, teaching 5th grade until her retirement in 1993. A few years later Ellen and Bob relocated to the Queensbury and South Glens Falls area sharing their last years together.
Amongst some of Ellen’s proudest moments and people are her children and grandchildren who she loved and adored. They were always in the forefront of her heart and mind.
She was always a teacher and shared her knowledge and passion for this with her family as well as all of those classrooms of children who lives she touched. You could always count on her being impeccably dressed and prepared even up to her last days she desired to be and look her best. Some of her other hobbies, places and passions that filled her soul were to be at the seashore, Cape Cod. This was a sanctuary to her. The water and the sand called to her heart. She loved music and was a very talented pianist, other hobbies were reading, knitting, sewing and doing the NY Times crossword puzzle. In her retirement years you could always count on finding her with a crossword puzzle near her.
The family wishes to thank so many people but especially the care from Dr. Giotti Grubbs at the CR Woods Cancer Center, the Eddy Palliative Care nurse, Amanda, and The Community Hospice of Saratoga team, Kelli, Karen, Stacy, Jen and Jean, that loved and cared for her in the final weeks. We also wish to thank the wonderful, loving and gracious neighbors who gave of themselves to assist the family with Ellen’s care.
