Obituary for Robert Perley "Bob" Mc Dougall

Robert Perley "Bob" Mc Dougall
Robert Perley (Bob) Mc Dougall

Argyle. Robert Perley Mc Dougall died on Tuesday, 29 May 2018, in the company of his devoted wife and children at the family farm he loved.

Born 8 April 1949 to Roland and Florence (Story) Mc Dougall, Bob was a life-long resident of the Argyle community. He grew up on the Mc Dougall family farm, the last farm continuously held and cultivated by the original family who were granted land in the Argyle Patent in 1764. He would make farming his life's work.

Bob graduated in 1967 from Argyle Central School, where he played football and basketball and served as Varsity Club officer. After being drafted into the Army that year, Bob trained as a Military Policeman and served at West Point, then in Korea, until he was honorably discharged in 1970. Over the years Bob supplemented his farm work with employment at various local establishments (Sheraton Catheter Company, Argyle School, Hercules, UPS and the PamTom Farm).

Bob married Mary Ellen Sherman on 5 August 1972, at a garden wedding at the Argyle home of David and Margie Mc Dougall. Together Bob and Mary Ellen raised three children and operated the farm. In 2000, they received the Bicentennial Farm Award from the New York State Agricultural Society (Department of Agriculture and Markets) in recognition of longstanding commitment to agriculture.

Bob brought innovative as well as traditional methods to his farming. Recently, he experimented with rotational grazing and was invited to lecture other cultivators on his practices.

Bob joined the United Presbyterian Church in Argyle (now the Argyle Presbyterian Church) in 1962 and served that community as Trustee and as a member of the committee that brought Steve Mc Lean to be pastor there. He served as an active member of the Argyle Alumni Association and a member of the Prospect Hill Cemetery Association, as well. He was invited to serve as the grand marshal for the Argyle 4th of July parade in 2014, along with Mary Ellen and their grandchildren.

Bob enjoyed the company of family at every opportunity. He delighted in annual apple-picking and Christmas-tree cutting excursions with the grandchildren. He and Mary Ellen hosted a two-day Mc Dougall clan gathering at the farm each Labor Day weekend, and their traditional 4th of July open-house picnic could draw over a hundred people. Bob also enjoyed listening to classical music, whether at a concert or in the barn. His talent as a storyteller is legend. Bob's travels with family and friends took him around the country and beyond to his ancestral homeland on the Isle of Islay in Argyllshire, Scotland, where he swapped stories with his distant Mc Dougall cousin, "Doonie," also a dairy farmer.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, as well as by his brother Bill. He leaves behind many well-loved family members, including Mary Ellen and their children: Corina Mc Dougall of South Glens Falls, Jared (Tina) Mc Dougall of Argyle, and Meighan (Michael) Kramer of Glens Falls; grandchildren Madeline, Skylar, and Adam Mc Dougall, Cora Mae Lynch, and Abigail, Lydia, and Corbin Kramer; his siblings: Doris Smith of Hudson Falls, David (Marjie) Mc Dougall of Argyle, Betsy (Richard) Smith of Argyle, Lillian (Norman) Stevens of Fort Edward, Roy (Ginny) Mc Dougall of Hudson Falls; Joyce (Robert) Tripp, Stanford; aunt, Evelyn Brownlee of Lake Land, Florida, sister-in-law Charlene Avallone (Chip Hughes) of Kailua, Hawai'i; brothers-in-law David Sherman (Doreen Streeter) of Gansevoort, Thomas Sherman (Gail) of Fort Edward, and Dennis Sherman (Roberta Mason) of Argyle; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, 1 June, at the Kilmer Funeral Home on 123 Main Street in Argyle.

The community is invited to attend a memorial service (casual dress) at the farm, 13 Perley Lane, Argyle Saturday, June 2nd, at 11 a.m. A reception that will follow at the church on Main Street, Argyle. (In the event of rain, the service will be held at the church as well).

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests anyone wishing to make a donation in Bob's name may contribute to the Robert P. Mc Dougall Memorial Scholarship at 5023 State Route 40, Argyle, NY. 12809, Attn.: Business Office or the Argyle Presbyterian Church, 48 Main Street, Argyle, NY 12809.
