Condolence From: Jim Willig
Condolence: I was very saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend Bob Wilkins. The community has lost not only a great athlete and citizen, but a great husband, father and friend. Bob and I met when he was working on the construction of the new Queensbury Motors building in 1963. I worked there. I knew of his prowess as an athlete and encouraged him to try upper level football and give the re-developing Greenjackets a look. Dick Leland and I and a group of dedicated players were seeking to return the team to the high level of competition that had been the team image since its founding in 1924. Bob was an instant impact player and instrumental in our winning the 1st Championship of the newly formed Empire Football League in 1969. The “Jackets” fielded a formidable defense and Bobby “Tank” Wilkins was a big part of it. He was a crowd favorite and had a faithful rooting section at our games. During my many years as a player, Coach, and GM I never knew a more dedicated team player, fan favorite, organizational supporter, or hard worker. Never missed practice, helped mark the field, and performed very well on it. He was the best friend a man could want, but between the lines be ready to tear your head off and hand it to you. I recall our trip to Ithaca, NY to see the NY Giants play a pre-season game with the Washington Redskins. Bob’s favorite team, Bob’s favorite player Linebacker Sam Huff, #70. After the game Bob ran onto the field where Sam was talking to some friends and clapped Sam hard on the shoulder from behind in greeting. I had occasion some years later to mention that greeting to Sam and he remembered it very well. He said when that big paw hit him it was a harder jolt than any he had received during the game. We had a good laugh about it. Of course Bob’s jersey number was #70 in Sam’s honor and “Tank” represented it very well. He will be missed by family, friends, team members, and the Hartford community where he was such a prominent figure. Rest in peace my good friend, teammate, and fellow Greenjacket. You were one of the very best.

Condolence: My Condolences to the Wilkins Family and certainly the Hartford Community. Bob was one of the most Kind and Caring Men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I will miss his "surprise" phone calls to me in the Winter checking up on me and my Hoop Team. Thanks for the laughs and certainly all the stories.... RIP Bob.
