Obituary for Arlene Etu (Hamblet)

Arlene Etu (Hamblet)
Fort Edward

Arlene L. Etu passed away at home peacefully on March 31, 2018.

Arlene was born May 16, 1923 in “Little Canada” in Fort Edward. She was the daughter of the late Flora Shepard Hamblet and Harry Hamblet. When Arlene was in junior high her family relocated to Savanah Georgia. She graduated in 1941 from Commercial High School, Savannah. She then worked as secretary for the Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed her time in the south until relocating to be married. Arlene became Mrs. Joseph Gyle Etu on February 1, 1948, in St. Joseph’s Church, Fort Edward. They were married for 63 years until his passing on July 31, 2011. They settled in their home on Seminary Street where she created many fond and loving memories for her children and grandchildren. For many years she enjoyed events put on by The Little Canada Club, family parties on Frank Street and at her home around the pool.

Arlene loved children and for a time provided daycare for several children in her home. She had many beloved pets and loved all animals.

During her lifetime Arlene pursued many interests and hobbies. She was very talented at all kinds of crafts. She was a very talented seamstress and sewed everything from pillows to formal gowns. Her hobbies included golf, bowling, shooting pool, sewing, crocheting, oil painting, building dollhouses, and creating holiday crafts. Arlene loved everything about Christmas, decorating her home beautifully. She also liked to gamble just a little, her favorite being slot machines and betting on the horses. She had fond memories of her trips to Atlantic City with her cousin, Lorraine Mann, and then with her daughter, Cyndie.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Arlene was predeceased by her brother, Gerald Dragon, his wife, Evelyn, and her sister, Genevieve (Jane) Dragon.

She is survived by her loving children and their spouses: Gayle (Bobby) Smith of Fort Edward; Vaughn (Rosario) Etu of Clayton, NJ; Pamela Etu (Allen Mallett) of Port Deposit, MD; and Cynthia (Brent) Haviland of Moreau, with whom she resided. Her grandchildren; Adam (Holly) Smith, Andrew Smith, Melissa Etu (John) Durham, Justin (Alex) Etu, Peter (Shannon) Mallett, April (Jason) Cournoyer, Brent Haviland, Sara Haviland (Brendan) Sullivan and Brooke Haviland.

She is survived by 11 Great Grandchildren: Brandon Tyler, Brianna and Brayden Smith, John, Abigail and Sophia Durham, Madeleine and Avery Cournoyer, Harrison, Emma and Desmond Sullivan.
Arlene is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Elsie Etu and Lorraine Etu and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her cockatiel, Jake, and family dogs, Nestley, Ella, and Bodie.

Friends and family may call from 11am – 12:30pm on Friday, April 6, 2018 at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828.
