Gerald A. Birnbaum

Gerald A. Birnbaum
SOUTH GLENS FALLS

Gerald A. Birnbaum passed away peacefully on December 30, 2017 at the Glens falls Center.

Born August 10, 1948 in Ticonderoga, NY, he was the son of the late Alfred and Sylvia (Hammond) Birnbaum.

Gerald attended South Glens Falls High School and worked with his father in the masonry business.

He proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy in 1967 and doing two tours in Vietnam where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze Star. Gerald was honorably discharged on January 29, 1973.

He lived in California for many years where he raised his three sons. He was always there for them while they were growing up- coaching baseball, involved in Boy Scouts, and going on family camping trips.

In 1998, Gerald moved back to New York when his father became ill. He loved classic trucks, playing the guitar and accordion, fishing and hunting. He was an amazing artist and created several wood-burned plaques of wildlife.

In addition to his parents, Gerald is predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Birnbaum.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons; Kevin Birnbaum (Shannon), and Eric Birnbaum (Leticia), his granddaughters; Alyssa and Chastity Birnbaum, and his Uncle Jack Hammond (Joyce). He is also survived by his companion and caregiver Linda Gilligan and her family.

Arrangements are in the care of the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828.

A graveside service with military honors will be performed at 1pm on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd, Schuylerville, NY.

A reception will follow at the South Glens Falls United Methodist Church, 15 Maplewood Parkway, South Glens Falls, NY.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff on Tower 3 and 6 at Glens Falls Hospital for their care and compassion during Gerald’s illness.

Memorial donations in Gerald’s name can be made to the South High Marathon Dance, 2 Bluebird Rd, South Glens Falls, NY 12803.
